This past weekend, seven members of the Collinsville High School’s Venturing crew traveled to Robbers Cave State Park in Wilburton, OK, to climb, rappel, and belay. This was the crew’s first activity and is a program of the school’s Outdoor Adventures Club.
“The crew rappelled down and I wrecked it with cobbler,” described Logan Schnell, who served as the crew’s acting-president during the event.
After leaving from the high school last Friday, the crew established their campsite at the state park and enjoyed their evening “cracker barrel”. Venturers from across Oklahoma and Arkansas joined the crew that weekend, totaling to over 50 participants.
The following day, the crew enjoyed rappelling over 40 foot compacted limestone cliffs, according to one of the weekend’s organizers. That afternoon, crew members: Megan Brillhart, Taylor Provinsal, and Logan Schnell, participated in a photo scavenger hunt around the park.
Later that night, the crew submitted a Dutch oven dessert, which won against all other crews’ entries, and voted in the local Scout council’s 2016-17 Venturing Officers’ Association. Area Venturing President Jake Brillhart explained the role of VOAs and announced an interstate gathering of Venturers in April, 2017.
“[I] had the opportunity to allow me step out of my box and experience nature in a new way,” explained Tracey Pabitzky, advisor for the crew.
