Cards Crush Rival Bulldogs At Home-Court

This entry is part 4 of 4 in the series basketball

Collinsville varsity boys are making waves in the 5A basketball district. Starting at a lower seed, the Cards have climbed the ladder of teams all the way to No. 7 in 5A teams according to OSSAA rankings. With a very young team, the Cards are performing amazingly on the court. Holding a solid record, and seat in the playoffs, the varsity team returned to home court to take on school rivals, the Skiatook Bulldogs. A massive crowd nearly filled both sides of the stands to watch the battle between the Cardinals and the Bulldogs.

Collinsville started a little behind the Bulldogs, but they were soon right on their tails at the end of the 1st quarter. Nathan Serna was already showing an explosive performance, stepping up to the FT line twice, and taking two shots from inside the paint, early in the 1st quarter. Austin Marler, Blake Ford, gage Taker, and Grayson Boomer were also on the board early.

The Bulldogs were experiencing several traveling calls in the 2nd quarter, allowing Collinsville to take control of the momentum of the game. The Cards were quickly leading the dogs. Marler had the first 3pt of the game, and Serna put up 10 points in the 2nd quarter, alone. It was still neck and neck, as Skiatook trailed 29-30.

The 2nd half excited the crowd; everyone was raised to their feet. Several penalties were thrown both ways, along with incredible plays from several players, causing all fans to shout in protest or cheer after a hard earned layup. Skiatook could not stop the traveling calls or technical penalties. Two Bulldog players were out of the game, one fouling out and the other for throwing a punch at Ethan Cole, who received six FTs after the slug and series of penalties at once. Cole made all six of these shots, furthering Collinsville’s lead.

At the end of the 4th quarter, the game was no longer neck and neck. Collinsville sent out all reserved players to finish out the final minutes of the game. The Cardinals crushed the Bulldogs with a final score of 67-53. Ethan Cole ended the night with 19 points and Nathan Serna came out with 23. Collinsville’ dominating basketball team is prepared to take on the best. “We’re ready. We go out with confidence and just knowing that we’re gonna win.” Serna stated after the game.

The Cards are working for the best chance possible in the playoffs. 1st round of Regionals, Collinsville will take on Edison. Austin Marler gave us the brief summary of what they expect to come at Regionals, “I feel pretty confident, personally and as a team, but there are a lot of factors, such as injuries, that are happening in every team right now. Nothing is predictable at this point, but we are very confident going into this.”
