Cardinal Boys Basketball Claim Homecoming Victory Over Glenpool

The Boys varsity basketball team returned to home courts for their 2018 homecoming game against the Glenpool Warriors. Collinsville, sitting at No. 9, was in a comfortable spot for playoff contention, but needed the win in this game to press for a better seed at State. With the season coming closer to a conclusion, every team is fighting for a spot. making every game come down to the final shot.

The Cards started out strong in their game against the warriors. Austin Marler, Ethan Cole, and Nathan Serna were the first to get on the board for Collinsville. Although several shots were taken and made, the warriors hung right with the home team. Several leading score changes happened in the 1st quarter, but Austin Marler gave Collinsville the lead with a 3pt buzzer beater.

The lead didn’t diminish after the 1st quarter; Marler put up three after three. In the 2nd quarter alone, the Senior had four completed threes out of five attempts. At the end of the half, Marler had five 3pt shots in the books and had racked up 19pts. Collinsville had a small lead and rested at 37pts.

Throughout the 2nd half the lead switched repeatedly. Marler was double or triple teamed at all times after his fantastic 1st half, but this opened up a window for Ethan Cole, shooting from in and outside of the arch, and Nathan Serna collecting fouls in the paint.

With seconds left, Collinsville merely had a 1pt lead. Nathan Serna and Austin Marler both got a foul inside the paint and stepped up to the line. Each made one of their FTs, pushing Collinsville’s lead to 3pts with two seconds left.

The Cards claimed victory over the warriors with a final score of 60-57. Austin Marler ended the night with 20pts and Ethan Cole with 14pts. ” We felt no pressure going into the last seconds. With every game being so close and competitive, we are used to it now,” Marler stated. “We know what we need to do and we go and get the win.” If the Cards are really used to the pressure and immune to last second nervousness, at this point in the season, the varsity boys will have a strong competitive edge in future games.
